Learn to love yourself this Valentine’s day

I believe that we should show some love to ourselves this Valentine’s day. We can sometimes forget how we are feeling in our busy lives and it can be hard to stop and take some time to relax. Learning to love yourself is important for your wellbeing: increasing confidence, alleviating stress levels and helping us to give and receive more love from others.

It may not be the easiest thing to do, and it is not something you can achieve in one day but starting is the first step. There are many things you can do to take some time to relax, and practice self-care, but really it all starts in your mind. Watch your thoughts and take some time to notice how often you say things to yourself that you wouldn’t say to another people. How many times have you doubted how capable you are, how often do you compare yourself to someone else? Too often.

Our first job in life as women is to get to know ourselves and I think a lot of times we don’t do that. We spend a lot of time pleasing, satisfying, looking out into the world to define who we are.

Try thinking more positively about yourself. Do some things you enjoy and take time alone to just be by yourself each day and check on how you are feeling. Focus less on other people, if people around you bring you down, step away from their negativity.

Apart from focusing on your mind, here are some other things you can do:

Take some time away from social media

I have already done a blog post all about taking a break from Instagram here. It can be a really positive step forward to focus less on others and gives you more time in your day.

Do things you enjoy and spend time outside

Doing things that you enjoy is really important and can help you to relax. Spending time in the fresh air can clear your mind.

Remove some things from your to do list

I often feel as if I always have too much to do, but simply removing some things and thinking about your priorities can be beneficial and lets you have more time for yourself. Waking up and going to bed earlier is another way to give you some more time.

Healthy eating and drink water

Feeding our bodies healthy foods and drinking enough water improves your mood and health.

Deep breathing and relaxation techniques

Breathing exercises can help you to relax, along with other techniques such as visualising your favourite place and practicing the five senses technique (five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste). I also use the Headspace meditation app.

Picture your perfect day and incorporate aspects into your routine

Obviously you may not be able to have your perfect day every day, but think about some of the things that you really like and incorporate them into your routine. (For example: spend some time making yourself a nice breakfast, set half an hour aside to read, spend some time with your family).

I really hope that you found this helpful and now you can start to show yourself some love, because you deserve it.
